Mango (Mangifera indica)

Tommy Atkins is the most popular of all commercial cultivars. This early season cultivar produces oblong well-balanced fruits that are tasty and smooth textured. The fruit tend to be long lasting and can withstand extended travel without bruising and degradation, making it an ideal export crop.

In the field, Tommy Atkins are a hardy disease resistance cultivar that has a wide soil tolerance and can withstand moderate frost. Mangoes prefer well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. For best results, trees should be watered fortnightly and kept within 2m of height.

Another popular commercial cultivar, Kent is a mid-season cultivar and when planted with early fruiting cultivars, significantly lengthens the farming season. The fruits are large, with vivacious red and green colouring when ripe. An ideal fruit for ‘on farm’ preserving juicing and drying.

Citrus (Citrus medica)

The universally popular orange is one the best-known fruits consumed globally. Typically, Valencia oranges are grown at low altitudes, in more arid regions that have good availability of water. Well-suited to large scale production, and when well-managed, the Valencia cultivar consistently produces high volume crops over an extended duration, making it an ideal long term cropping choice.

In the field the Valencia cultivar thrives in deep well draining soil with a pH of between 6 and 6.5. Moderately forest tolerant, Valencia can withstand a wide temperature tolerance, from 45 degrees to -5 degrees

Known for its easy peel nature, bursting with sweet tangy flavour, the Empress Mandarin is an easy choice for many consumers, who can eat these deliciously sweet fruits ‘on the go’. The Empress Mandarins have a firm skin, giving it supply chain longevity. These trees can be planted both in your garden and in a large-scale orchard.

In the field these trees require deep well draining soil with a pH of between 6 and 6.5. Moderately frost tolerant, Empress is ideally suited to many regions in Southern Africa, with even small orchards able to produce high volumes of fruit, making it an ideal fruit for both large scale and small-scale production

The more common of the Lime cultivars, the Persian Lime or the Bearrs Lime, as it is also known, is a triploid cross between Key lime and lemon. A common commercially grown cultivar, produce ripe green fruit with an excellent balance between sweet and tangy. These fruits can be included in a wide range of cooking and food related applications and in particular preserving as marmalades or pickles.

In the field citrus in general requires deep well draining soil with a pH of between 6 and 6.5. Persian Limes make a wonderful addition to orchard projects, or even simply well positioned in a garden, providing much flavour to food and drink.

The tried and tested Rough Lemon is the ‘go to’ lemon fruit in southern Africa, particularly in the informal sector. Highly adaptable, hardy and cold tolerant. The Rough Lemon is an ideal choice for orchards located in the highveld regions.

In the field Rough lemons are a hardy adaptable citrus suitable for greenfield and small scale orchard developments. With all citrus, Rough lemon require deep, well-draining soils in the ph range 6 and 6.5. Rough Lemons are an ideal utilitarian fruit, which is very popular for a variety of culinary uses.

Avocado (Persea americana)

The Hass cultivar was developed in California in the 1960’s and has since become the go to avocado variety. Well-known amongst consumers, the Hass is a good choice for farmers wanting to produce a readily recognisable fruit. Producing a medium sized fruit that is rich in smooth creamy and nutty flavours.

In the field, the Hass is best suited to temperate climates with an altitude above 1,000 metres above sea level, high rainfall and low temperature variations. Avocado is best grown in loose well-draining soils, allowing ample drainage and nutrient cycling. The trees do well in an intensely manage orchard, where trees are planted at tight spaces and kept under 2 metres in height.
